Patron Scheme

The Idea

The hardest aspect of being an artist is unpredictability. It is hard to predict when people will like your ideas, it is hard to predict how any individual piece of art will turn out when you start it and it is hard to predict when you will get income and how much it will be. For me, there is the added unpredictability of my illness, which sometimes doesn’t hold me back at all, but at other times will stop me painting for weeks at a time. So, what would be incredibly valuable to me and my work would be a regular income, no matter how small.

Patronage is a very old idea and it involves an artist getting paid, not for individual pieces of artwork, but just for working at their art. In the past, this system has been hugely beneficial for artist production, because it has allowed artists to produce the best work they can, rather than constantly chasing after their next sale. For me, even the smallest regular income would allow me to experiment more with subject-matter and materials, keep a better stock of tools such as brushes and pigments, and do more practise work like sketching from life, without feeling that it’s taking time away from ‘making money’.

Become a Patron

In the past an artist would usually have a single patron who was rolling in cash and would give the artist such a generous stipend that he/she essentially worked just for them. Well that’s not going to work in the 21st century. Instead, my idea is to ask if people who enjoy my art would consider being micro-patrons by paying a small monthly amount, and in return you would get a few bonuses:

£3 Patrons:

  • Mentioned on my homepage in a ‘Thanks to my Patrons’ section (you can use a pseudonym)
  • A monthly e-newsletter, with exclusive content
  • Advanced notice of any originals for sale before they go to galleries or on the website
  • 20% off giclee prints
  • 10% off originals
  • 1 free pack of cards per year (in January)

£5 Patrons:

  • Mentioned on my homepage in a ‘Thanks to my Patrons’ section (you can use a pseudonym)
  • A monthly e-newsletter, with exclusive content
  • Advanced notice of any originals for sale before they go to galleries or on the website
  • 40% off giclee prints
  • 20% off originals
  • 1 free calendar per year (in January)

How it Works

To sign up, just send me a message either via facebook or my contact page to let me know that you would like to be a patron, and what rate you would be contributing. I will then give you payment details and made a record of your patronage. Your patron benefits above would start from the date of your first payment. It would be up to you to set up the standing order, and to let me know if you decide to stop your patronage. Please do not worry about ceasing your patronage at any point – I am grateful for any support when you are able to give. If I notice that a monthly payment is missing, I will make contact to check whether you would like to be taken off the scheme.
